Summary Statement

We are seeking a Master’s-level graduate student pursuing a degree in research, marketing, business, or a related field. You must be able to work independently as well as collaboratively; have an interest in learning about issues affecting individuals age 50 and older; and possess excellent research, organizational, and communications skills.
The Research Department of AARP is looking for a strong Master’s-level graduate student to serve as a paid, part-time intern this Fall 2017 (September – December). The internship will provide the student with hands-on experience in applied research, data analysis, and data visualization, a chance to do meaningful work that impacts society, and the opportunity for making relevant professional connections. This position offers an exciting opportunity to work with the largest social welfare organization in the country and is an excellent way for a talented graduate student interested in research and marketing to acquire hands-on experience as part of a small, committed and professional team.
The Intern will work on a variety of research projects. Tasks include fact checking reports, writing backgrounds for reports, data mining public datasets, preparing graphics for presentations, conducting and summarizing basic data analyses, creating Infographics, creating Tableau visualizations, and an array of other research-related tasks.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will possess excellent writing and communication skills and be inquisitive, organized, detail-oriented, friendly, able to multi-task, knowledgeable of research practices, and be comfortable with both standard Microsoft Office software (particularly Excel and Word) and SPSS. Applicants must have excellent critical thinking/problem solving skills and an ability to identify, analyze and resolve issues creatively and independently. Applicants must be actively attending an accredited university. Students pursuing their MA, MS, or PhD degrees in social sciences, communications, policy, or business are encouraged to apply.
The time commitment is 20 hours per week at our downtown DC office from September – December 2017. The office is conveniently located near the Gallery Place metro. The internship is competitively paid.
An intern coordinator will be responsible for providing guidance and workflow management to the intern and the intern will also have access to a mentor and to the Director of State Research.

Requirements

Interns must be currently enrolled in a degreed program at an accredited college or university; maintain a minimum GPA of 3.0; and be considered graduate students.
AARP also considers non-traditional interns who are looking to re-enter the workforce or change careers. This may include those who have previously graduated college and are now enrolled in a continuing education program.
