Organization Description :

The REACH Center works with nearly 3,000 at-risk youth and young adults ages 16-24 each year to provide them with educational opportunities, career development, peer mentoring, and other supportive services. REACH has a strong track record of leveraging institutional partnerships to serve young people, and coordinates programs that annually place over 500 people in jobs, graduate 50 students on average from GED classes, and provide permanent housing for up to 75 youth experiencing homelessness. REACH is at the forefront of youth development, career readiness, and the fight against youth homelessness in the Greater Puget Sound Region. The work of the REACH Center contributes to positive systems change and has sparked interest in widespread replication of the REACH service delivery model.

Position Description :

The REACH Program Coordinator – Summer Jobs 253 and Career Pathways oversees the logistical operation of the Summer Jobs 253 program, a City of Tacoma-led program that aims to place 253 public school students into their first work experience each summer. Summer Jobs 253 was launched in 2013 and was recognized by the White House Champions of Change event in 2016 after steady growth and innovation, including the addition of three academic tracks for credentialing, financial literacy training, and job readiness training. This position also supports employment related activities and events onsite at the REACH Center. The ideal candidate has a record of proven success in supporting at-risk youth and young adults, is skilled in team building, project management, and communication, and thrives in fast-paced work environments. This position reports directly to the REACH Center Director.

Responsibilities :

  • Oversee the REACH Center’s role in the City of Tacoma’s Summer Jobs 253 program, a program that provides paid work experience and training for Tacoma Public School students. This will include year-round employer engagement/recruitment, administrative tracking, billing, logistical preparation, and event planning.
  • Ensure REACH meets its annual contracted outcomes for employer recruitment and student placement.
  • Lead a team of seasonal case workers to support 253+ students during their first work experience each summer.
  • Plan and implement employer and student orientations for the Summer Jobs 253 program.
  • Assist with and recommend new initiatives to facilitate successful job seeker outcomes. Work with REACH Center Director to create strategies for the improvement of REACH Center programs.
  • Participate in community outreach, meetings, conferences, and professional development trainings as needed.
  • Support event planning and workshop development and execution for walk-in job seekers at REACH.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Experience Required and Desirable Skills :

  • Bachelor’s degree in education, social work, nonprofit management, sociology, psychology, or a related field required.
  • Minimum of one year of experience managing program/programs serving at-risk youth and young adults.
  • Experience in sales or fundraising is desired but not required. The ideal candidate will be able to create an employer recruiting strategy and effectively “pitch” the Summer Jobs 253 program to employers in alignment with that strategy.
  • Proven ability to develop partnerships and complete work across agencies.
  • High levels of emotional intelligence and cultural competency in the areas of youth development, LGBTQ youth, and racial equity.
  • Passion for serving at-risk youth and young adults.
  • Experience supervising staff and/or volunteers.
  • Strong data management, organizational, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to organize and prioritize multiple tasks.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and adapt to changing needs, priorities, and timelines.
  • Flexibility and adaptability with work schedule, which may include occasional evening and weekend commitments.
  • Training in the following is desirable but not required: trauma informed care, LGBTQ cultural competency, racial equity and anti-racist institutions, domestic violence, commercial and sexual exploitation of children (CSEC), and vicarious trauma.
  • Washington Driver’s License and reliable mode of transportation required by time of hire.
